The Environmental Protection Agency is tasked with developing best practices for collecting batteries in ways that are technically and environmentally sound, safe for waste management workers, and optimize the value of materials derived from recycled batteries. Additionally, the Environmental Protection Agency is required to establish a program promoting battery recycling through the development of voluntary labeling guidelines. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the current U.S. recycling rate, which stands at about 32%, with a target set by the Environmental Protection Agency to reach 50% by the end of the decade.
