Description

The Joint Fire Science Program, established in 1998, is an interagency partnership between the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and the Department of the Interior (DOI) that provides funding for basic and applied wildfire science research programs.

Additional Program Notes & TCS Insights

Prior to FY2017, JFSP was funded under the Wildland Fire Management (WFM) account. In FY2017 Congress indicated that funding for JFSP should come from funds appropriated to the Forest Service’s Forest Rangeland and Research account. In FY2018, JFSP was only funded through the DOI ($3 million). The FY2019 President’s Budget Request sought to eliminate the program entirely, but Congress continued to provide funding. Examples of projects funded in FY2023 include studying fire behavior, prescribed fires, fuel reduction, and post-fire recovery.
