Description

The Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire Assistance Act provides compensation to persons injured as a result of the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire. Allowable damages include loss of property, uncompensated business loss, and financial loss such as increase mortgage insterest costs, temporary relocations expenses, or debris removal costs.

On April 6, 2022, the U.S. Forest Service initiated aprescribed burn on Federal land in the Santa Fe National Forest in San Miguel County, New Mexico, that exceeded the containment capabilities of the Forest Service and became known as the ‘‘Hermit’s Peak Fire.’’ On April 19, 2022, the Calf Canyon Fire also began burning on Federal land in San Miguel County, New Mexico. The source of the Calf Canyon Fire was later identified as the result of a pile burn in January 2022 that remained dormant under the surface. The U.S. Forest Service has assumed responsibility for the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire.

Appropriations Notes

The $2.5 billion appropriated for recovery from the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire in FY2023 was made available by re-directing unspent FEMA funds from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act passed in March 2020.
