Description

The Grazing Management program oversees approximately 95 million acres of National Forest System lands. According to the U.S. Forest Service, its mission is to “maintain a sustainable supply of forage for livestock, sustain water resources, and provide suitable wildlife habitat and ecosystem services.”

Additional Program Notes & TCS Insights

Per Forest Service budget justifications, some funding in recent years has been directed to support targeted grazing for hazardous fuels reduction (e.g. In the FY2025 Budget Justification, USFS reports that “the Grazing Management program worked with other Forest Service program areas to fund projects that use grazing animals such as cows, goats, and sheep to graze and trample the dry vegetation that can start or spread wildfires on National Forest System lands”). Studies have found that grazing can be a tool for hazardous fuels reduction and wildfire prevention, but heavy grazing during the growing season can also potentially lead to an increase in fire frequency.
