Wildfire Activities Funded: Research, Preparedness, Mitigation
TOTAL APPROPRIATIONS (IN MIL)
Description
The NASA Wildland Fires Program, under the Earth Science Applied Sciences Program, supports the improved prediction, management, and mitigation of overall impacts of wildfires, including developing research, technology, and applications to operational fire management agencies and organizations.Additional Program Notes & TCS Insights
NASA’s Earth Science Division Applied Sciences Program (ASP) has four projects: Capacity Building, Mission and Applied Research, Disaster Support, and Applications. The Applications project “sponsors the integration of Earth observations in the decisions and actions of community organizations” and has eight formal elements: Agriculture, Capacity Building, Climate & Resilience, Disasters, Ecological Conservation, Health & Air Quality, Water, and Wildland Fire Management.Appropriations

Appropriations Notes
Limited appropriations information is available on the NASA Wildland Fire Management Program. NASA budget documents do not include a breakdown of appropriations for subprograms within the Earth Science Division Applied Sciences Program (ASP). The ASP was appropriated $75.2 million in FY2023 and $84.6 million in FY2024 according to the agency’s FY2023 and FY2024 spending plans.
Information about formal applications areas comes from NASA budget justifications. Starting in the FY2016 budget justification, the Applications project included Wildfires as a formal applications area. In FY2018, the project concluded the dedicated Wildland Fires applications area and shifted those activities into the Ecological Forecasting and the Disaster applications areas. In the FY2024 budget justification, Wildfires was once again listed as an applications program element. In the FY2024 budget justification this was renamed to Wildland Fires.
